The Edge of the Road and the Grass

I can’t give you excess.
I can’t give you discretionary.

I can’t give you portfolios,
of stocks,
that rise and fall
like a deep breath.

We’re parked
on the edge
of the road
and the grass.

Sometimes we sit an enjoy.
Sometimes we zoom away.

I can’t give you designer.
I can’t give you luxury.

I can’t give you expensive tags
on things
that shine and stand out
like a silver tear on a red face.

But what I can give you
is a lifetime.

That’s a pretty significant gift, says a man who has been married for 44 years and counting. Great thought. Great poem.
